1861-O W-11 Confederate Obverse Liberty Seated half dollar, NGC AU55. This coin was struck from the exact same obverse die that produced the famous and extremely rare original Confederate half dollars, with the strong die crack from rim to nose, but this example is a very early die state one, having been struck before the die cracked! We have never handled an example of this die state before. Though there are other varieties that research by Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert have shown conclusively were struck by the Confederacy, the W-11 is the only variety currently certified as such, but we simply aren't sure if NGC (or PCGS) would certify this as a Confederate Obverse coin, though they certainly should. The die is the die, and this is the Confederate obverse die! The surface quality of this example is very pleasing and the coin has excellent eye appeal for the grade. We have solid, bright, frosty luster and no significant issues.

No collection of Seated halves or Civil War issues is complete without this historic rarity! The relatively new attribution, W-11, comes from our friend Bill Bugert's masterwork, "A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Volume lV, New Orleans Branch Mint, 1853-O WA to 1861-O". OK, that's quite a title, but it really is quite a book! This particular volume is the 4th in the series that will eventually cover all the minute die varieties of the entire series - Bill having previously completed San Francisco, Carson City and the first part of New Orleans.

And now, the 5th volume, covering the Philadelphia issues from 1839 thru 1852 is here! We strongly recommend that you obtain copies for your numismatic library.
