The coin itself is a problem-free VF20 example that shows light gray patina over each side. This is probably the most underrated Seated Liberty Half Dollar in existence. When compared to the 1853-O No Arrows, of which also only 4 are known, this coin is an underrated red-headed step child. Both the 1853-O No Arrows and the 1817/4 are classic rarities that everyone knows, yet for some reason the 1842 Small Date, Reverse of 1839 is still in the shadows, unrecognized by all but the most ardent numismatists.
This will change as time passes and more collectors realize the extent of its true unavailability. How and why was this coin made? Instead of the Medium Letters reverse that was used from 1842 and onward, a Small Letters reverse of the type used from 1839 to 1841 was installed in the coining press. Make no mistake; this is a major variety.
