The 1878 S seated liberty half dollar is the key to the seated liberty half dollar series. This example has been graded VG-8 by NGC and carries strong details for the grade. The PCGS website estimates that there are fewer than 50 examples surviving today. There have been four coins graded VG-8 by PCGS and only three coins graded VG-8 by NGC. This makes a total certified population of only seven coins in this grade by both PCGS and NGC. However, very few collectors are ever able to complete the seated liberty half dollar collection solely due to this very valuable coin.
