This extremely rare coin was among those aboard the S.REPUBLIC on their way back to Louisiana to aid in the rapidly-growing Post Civil War economy of New Orleans. THEY NEVER REACHED THEIR DESTINATION! THE REPUBLIC became the victim of a Massive Hurricane and was lost off the Coast of Georgia until it was rediscovered, its artifacts salvaged by ODYSSEY MARINE EXPLORATION in 2003. This rare variety "Misplaced Date" Minting Error 1858-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar was among the payload they removed.
I have not seen others of these from The Republic's Wreckage, but I have no evidence that it is one-of-a-kind. TO ME, IT'S UNIQUE.. The Coin is NGC-Certified and its history documented in the accompanying 12-page booklet.
